Music, art, movement: why creativity matters more than you think

14 May 2026

CSPD Encourages students to express themselves through creativity

Did you know creativity is one of the biggest predictors of how well children do in school and in life?

It's not just about making art or playing music. Creative learning plays a powerful role in how children learn, think and grow. And the research is clear: students who engage regularly in creative activities develop stronger problem-solving skills, improved focus and greater confidence - key foundations for success in school and beyond.

Here's what that could actually look like for your child:

  1. Builds confidence
When kids express themselves through music, visual arts and movement, something shifts. They learn to express ideas, take risks and find their voice, not just in creative spaces, but in the classroom and in life.
  2. Strengthens focus
Creative learning activates different parts of the brain, improving concentration and memory. Whether it’s learning an instrument, rehearsing a performance or crafting a visual piece, students quietly build discipline and persistence that spill into every subject.
  3. Encourages critical thinking
Creativity teaches students to explore, experiment and think differently. These skills are essential for navigating the demands of school and a rapidly changing world.
  4. Supports wellbeing
Creative outlets provide students a healthy way to process emotions, reduce stress and build resilience. It's not just good for their growth; it makes them feel better, too.
  5. They’ll feel like they belong
Performances, exhibitions and shared creative experiences do something powerful: they give students a sense of pride and connection to their school community. Feeling seen and valued matters and helps them feel engaged.

That’s exactly the vision behind CAPTIVATE, Catholic Schools Parramatta Diocese’s dedicated arts program for students from Kindergarten to Year 12 to explore their creative talents through music, dance, drama and visual arts.

Whether it's specialist teachers and professional artists coming directly into classrooms, instrumental tuition and ensembles, or system-wide eisteddfods, exhibitions and festivals, CAPTIVATE meets students where they are and takes the arts seriously at every level.

Creativity shapes who a child becomes and CAPTIVATE is our commitment that every student in our diocese has access to arts education that genuinely develops them. It's how we lift the standard of creative learning across all 80 of our schools, giving students experiences in music, dance, drama and visual arts that go far beyond what any single school could offer alone.

Liz Jackson, Head of Enrichment

At Catholic Schools Parramatta Diocese, we believe every child deserves the chance to grow, create and truly belong. If you'd like to see how our schools can support your child’s learning, wellbeing and creativity, we’d love to help you find the right fit.

What a great night we had at the Hills Band Festival last night! Our senior band was awarded a gold award, the adjudicator's choice award and most entertaining band - an outstanding achievement. Well done to our band, and especially our amazing band teachers. Thank you to Teaching Services Australia for hosting the band festival and for providing music tuition at OLOR and other schools in the Hills District.

It's the highlight of Year 6 every year - the Canberra excursion! Last week, Year 6 put their learning about democracy, government into action, visiting Parliament House, the Electoral Education Centre and the Museum of Australian Democracy at Old Parliament House. They also explored our nation's culture, heritage and history at the Australian War Memorial, Australian Institute of Sport, the National Portrait Gallery, and of course, everyone's favourite Canberra excursion destination - Questacon! Thank you to our Year 6 students for the positive way they represented OLOR, and to our amazing teachers who worked well outside normal work hours to make the excursion happen - Mrs Luland, Mrs Prince, Mrs Sebbens, Mrs Lee, Mrs Noonan and Mr Battikha. The Australian Government recognises the importance of all young Australians being able to visit the national capital as part of their Civics and Citizenship education. To assist families in meeting the cost of the excursion the Australian Government is contributing $30 per student to our school under the Parliament and Civics Education Rebate program. The rebate is paid directly to the school upon completion of the excursion.

Look who visited Kindergarten yesterday? As part of their learning this term about ‘Who is Our Neighbour?’, Fr Chris shared valuable insights into Catholic beliefs and helped Kindy explore what it means to show dignity to others. Together, they discussed ways we can treat those around us with kindness, love, respect, and compassion in our everyday lives.

Last week, our Year 6 Gold Debating Team competed in their first ever debate. The team debated the topic, “Climate change is humanity’s greatest threat,” against St John XXIII Catholic College. While they narrowly missed out on the win, they worked hard to prepare and deliver thoughtful speeches, as well as collaborate and support each other. Thank you to our students who assisted as chairperson, timekeeper and visitor hosts. We are incredibly proud of the effort, courage and teamwork shown by all students. We look forward to our Blue team's debate in Week 7.
