Transitioning smoothly into ‘big school’: What parents need to know

12 Jan 2026

The first day of Kindergarten!

It’s a milestone filled with excitement, pride and maybe a few nerves (for both you and your child!). Starting “big school” marks the beginning of a whole new adventure, and with a little preparation, you can help make those first weeks calm, confident and full of smiles.

1. Talk it up with excitement!
Children take their cues from you. Speak positively about school, the friends they’ll make, the fun activities and the stories they’ll hear. This helps build excitement rather than anxiety. If you’re feeling nervous, that’s normal too, just try to keep the focus on the positives!

2. Practise the little things
In the lead-up to school, have a few “practice mornings.” Pack the school bag, try on the uniform and walk or drive past the school together. Familiarity makes everything feel a little less overwhelming when the big day arrives.

3. Create a calm morning routine
Have a predictable morning - breakfast, get dressed, brush teeth, bag in hand. This helps children feel secure. Try it out before term starts so it becomes second nature. And remember: even if the first morning feels like a blur, a hug, a smile and a confident goodbye go a long way.

4. Expect tiredness (and big emotions)
Starting school is exciting and exhausting! Don’t be surprised if your child is extra tired or emotional in those first few weeks. Keep afternoons simple, with plenty of rest, snacks and downtime.

5. Stay connected
Ask open-ended questions like “What was the best thing you did today?” rather than “What did you learn?” And remember, every child settles in at their own pace. If you have any concerns, your child’s teacher is there to help.

Starting school is a big step, but it’s also the start of something wonderful - new friends, new skills and new adventures. At our Catholic schools, we’re here to partner with you in nurturing your child’s learning, faith and wellbeing from the very beginning.

This week we celebrate Holy Week, and commemorate the events the led to Jesus' death and resurrection. We gathered together as a school community on Monday in prayer, and today children will go to the Conventual Franciscan Shrine at the Friary to pray the Stations of the Cross. You are also welcome to join our parish community as it celebrates Holy Thursday, Good Friday and Easter Sunday. Times for all celebrations are on their website, https://olorparishkellyville.org.au/

Thank you to everyone who supported our recent Big Water Walk, supporting Caritas Australia. Your generosity will help make a difference in people's lives, honouring their dignity as we reach out with compassion. You can still make a donation - jump onto the Qkr app before tomorrow morning. Well done to all the children for getting involved, and to Miss Takchi, Mrs Rodrigues and our amazing Faith in Action Team who made the day such a success.

This term in Religious Education, Year 4 have been learning "Why are people hungry?" Last week, their learning culminated in an act of service for people who serve our parish community. They all worked together to create an amazing lunch for the Conventual Franciscan Friars, parish office and school staff. Not only did it meet people's physical hunger, but their hunger for connection as well. Congratulations Year 4 on your amazing efforts, and thank you to the Year 4 teachers, Miss Tackhi and Mrs Rodrigues for supporting the children.

Every year, OLOR takes part in National Ride to School Day, and this year was no exception. Our bike racks were overflowing with bikes and scooters! A number of families made it a family activity, with parents joining their children on bikes, and even running little support crews in the family car to help get bikes or scooters home later in the day (not quite Tour de France level, but still very much appreciated!). A big thank you to Mrs Prince for organising another great Ride to School Day.

There was plenty to celebrate at our recent assembly. We acknowledged our Principal's Award recipients, our representative swimmers, and listened to another fantastic performance from the school band.

700+ Unite for Project Compassion Big Water Walk

More than 700 students and staff from 23 schools across Catholic Schools Parramatta Diocese (CSPD) came together for Caritas Australia’s Big Water Walk in support of Project Compassion. Beginning at Parramatta Park, students carried buckets of water along a 4km route, gaining a glimpse of the daily journey faced by people in developing communities, especially women and children, in search of clean water.

Congratulations to Assisi and Kolbe Houses for earning 1000 tokens of respect! As a reward, all students in Assisi and Kolbe will have a crazy sock day this Friday, 27 March. Although Assisi reached the goal at Friday's assembly, today's addition of tokens from Car Pick Up sees Kolbe reach the 1000 tokens mark as well. Children are still to wear their usual Friday uniform - only the socks are to be crazy!
