New playground equipment for the students and more!

24 Sep 2020

New Playground equipment!

The two big gumtrees that used to reside outside the school office have been repurposed into new playground equipment for the children.

With slides, seats, a pirate ship design and more, we can't wait to see the new playground once it's complete!

Year 4! History, math, writing, sport, play and more!

We have been very busy in Year 4! History, Math, Writing, Sport, Play and more!

Our History Unit for this Term has seen us investigate the Driving Question, 'Who Does Australia Belong To?', paying close attention to our Indigenous Roots, the early Explorers and the European's arrival to the Colony. We have immersed ourselves in Australia's past, investigating History via our Reading and Writing Units.

We have written Diary Entries, Letters and Articles from the perspectives of the Explorers, Indigenous Australians, Convicts, Officials and Governors.

This process has enabled the students to demonstrate both their Creative Writing Skills as well as their knowledge of History.

The culmination of this Unit of work will be celebrated and demonstrated this coming week by the students of Year 4 as their collaborative Teams share their understandings of Australia's History at an Exhibition hosted in our Learning Spaces for their peers in Year 3.

In Math, we had the opportunity to explore a variety of Problem Solving concepts with a visit from 'World of Math'.

The practical interactive experiences provided the students with lots of inquiry, fun and learning! These opportunities definitely proved that Math is all around us!

In Sport, the students have been developing skills in Gymnastics, European Handball and Touch Football.

We may not be Olympic Champions yet, but we have fun striving to be our best!

The last week of Term 3 is sure to be like all the others; busy, challenging and lots of fun! We look forward to the adventures ahead!

Term 2 is often a time for excursions, and our biggest excursion each year is Year 6's trip to Canberra! Last month, Year 6 put their learning about democracy and government into actiion, visiting Parliament House, the Electoral Education Centre and the Australian War Memorial. They also explored our nation's culture and heritage and history at the Australian Institute of Sport, the National Portrait Gallery, and of course, everyone's favourite Canberra excursion destination - Questacon! Thank you to our Year 6 students for the positive way they represented OLOR, and to our amazing teachers who worked well outside normal work hours to make the excursion happen - Mrs Luland, Mrs Miller, Mrs Prince, Mrs Noonan and Mr Battikha. The Australian Government recognises the importance of all young Australians being able to visit the national capital as part of their Civics and Citizenship education. To assist families in meeting the cost of the excursion the Australian Government is contributing $30 per student to our school under the Parliament and Civics Education Rebate program. The rebate is paid directly to the school upon completion of the excursion.

There was much to celebrate at our assembly on Friday afternoon. We presented our Principal's Awards, and members of FIAT (our Faith in Action Team) spoke to us about our OLOR Founding Values of Hospitality and Service. We also had the opportunity to present our age champions and runners up from our Athletics Carnival last Tuesday. Congratulations everyone!
